Dedicated to providing patient centered orthopedic care through compassion and excellence for the people of Hawai’i
Dr. Chang provides comprehensive orthopedic care for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, with a specialized focus on foot and ankle injuries and disorders. He treats patients throughout Windward Oʻahu, Kailua, and Honolulu, offering both non-surgical and surgical solutions tailored to restore mobility, relieve pain, and improve function.
Conditions Treated
Osteoarthritis is a common cause of joint pain and stiffness, particularly in the knee, hip, shoulder, and ankle. Patients often notice worsening pain with activity, decreased range of motion, and difficulty performing daily tasks such as walking or climbing stairs.
Fractures of the foot and ankle are traumatic bony injuries often caused by falls, sports injuries, or accidents. Patients typically experience sudden pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty bearing weight or walking following the injury. Often times surgery is necessary to treat the fracture.
Bunions and hammertoes are common forefoot deformities that can cause pain, shoe irritation, and difficulty walking. Patients often notice progressive toe misalignment, pressure-related pain with footwear, and increasing discomfort during standing or daily activities.
Foot and ankle deformities, such as flatfoot, high-arched (cavus) foot, and Charcot arthropathy, can lead to pain, instability, and difficulty walking. Patients often notice progressive changes in foot shape, altered balance, and increasing discomfort during standing or daily activities.
Soft tissue sports-related injuries of the foot and ankle, including ankle instability and repeated ankle sprains, are common causes of pain, swelling, and recurrent injury. Patients often experience pain with activity, feelings of the ankle “giving way,” and difficulty returning to sports or uneven walking surfaces.
Tendon injuries of the foot and ankle are common causes of pain, weakness, and loss of function, often occurring after acute injury or repetitive overuse. Patients may experience sudden pain or a popping sensation, swelling, and difficulty pushing off, walking, or returning to normal activities.
Surgeries and Procedures Performed
Dr. Chang provides a full spectrum of orthopedic foot and ankle care, offering treatments that range from non-invasive in-office procedures to advanced surgical interventions. His surgical experience includes numerous lower extremity procedures including ankle replacement, arthroscopic ankle surgery, bunion correction, cartilage repair, Achilles tendon repair, and fracture treatment, serving patients throughout Windward Oʻahu, Kailua, and Honolulu.
Surgical treatment of arthritis in the foot and ankle may include joint replacement or joint fusion for patients with advanced pain, stiffness, and loss of function. These procedures are designed to relieve pain, improve stability, and restore mobility when non-surgical treatments are no longer effective.
Fracture fixation of the foot and ankle is a surgical treatment used to stabilize broken bones after traumatic injury, such as falls, sports injuries, or accidents. The procedure aims to restore bone alignment, promote healing, and allow patients to safely return to weight bearing and normal function.
Bunion correction and other forefoot procedures are performed to address painful toe deformities and structural misalignment of the front of the foot. These treatments aim to relieve pain, improve alignment, and restore comfortable walking when conservative measures are no longer effective.
Deformity correction procedures of the foot and ankle are performed to address abnormal alignment caused by congenital conditions, arthritis, nerve-related disorders, or prior injury. These treatments aim to restore proper structure, improve stability, and relieve pain when deformity interferes with walking or daily activities.
Ankle ligament repair, reconstruction, and stabilization procedures are used to treat chronic ankle instability and recurrent sprains caused by ligament injury. These procedures aim to restore joint stability, reduce pain, and improve confidence with walking, uneven surfaces, and athletic activities when non-surgical treatments have failed.
Treatment of tendinopathy and tendon tears of the foot and ankle is aimed at relieving pain, restoring strength, and improving function after overuse or acute injury. Management may include non-surgical therapies or surgical repair to support healing and allow a safe return to walking and daily activities.
